PPT Background

Over the past years the poultry program at the University of Guelph has seen a serious decline resulting from financial cutbacks and the realignment of commodity based programs to discipline based programs. Coupled with the loss of identifiable poultry researchers, the University no longer has a research or teaching program that is responsive to the needs of Ontario’s poultry industry. This situation leaves Ontario’s poultry industry in a precarious position relative to its competitive and sustainable production in a rapidly changing market and international environment.

The Solution

The Poultry Industry Council has spent considerable effort negotiating the creation of a strong poultry team at the University of Guelph. The results of these negotiations combine the strengths and resources of Ontario’s poultry industry, the provincial government through OMAFRA and the University itself. These three parties are creating a strong poultry team designed to enhance the technolhogical advancement of the industry through research, teaching, technology transfer and associated services such as diagnostics, health surveillance and data collection. This initiative will support the industry in the context of: poultry health and welfare, poultry production, HACCP, management systems, economic and environmental issues, food quality and maximal food safety.

Specifically, the agreement between the PIC, OMAFRA and the University has resulted in the hiring of two new tenure track positions including a poultry epidemiologist and poultry pathobiologist, placing an environmental physiologist in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science, the hiring of a Poultry Health Management Lead through OMAFRA to be located in the Department of Pathobiology and relocating OMAFRA’s Poultry Specialist to the Department of Pathobiology, OVC to ensure that researchers and field specialists are working in close proximity.

The above program will greatly improve the educational, technology transfer and scientific resources available to Ontario’s poultry industry
